Lately, it's been hard for me to set aside time to simply relax and enjoy time with myself or others. I tend to make sure all my activities outside of work are planned and productive. Don't get me wrong, I like being busy. Keeping up with yoga and this blog definitely keeps me on a creative path. But I'm learning that busy doesn't always mean productive and productive doesn't always mean creative. This past weekend was a lesson in taking time to relax, taking long walks, and enjoying the company of good friends. On Friday, I took a personal day from work and walked around the Albuquerque Botanical Gardens. These gardens have held a special place in my heart since I was a kid, and visiting as an adult feels like walking into a familiar embrace. I feel more inspired than I have in a long time, which goes to show that being productive all the time doesn't really bode well for creativity. After this weekend, I feel ready to create, write, and design with ease and flow, rather than pushing against my own "hard-work + no play" rhetoric.
Here are some ideas for relaxation and inspiration:
- Throw a frisbee at the park with friends
- Visit your local library and stay for hours
- Write a long letter to a friend
- Make a tropical smoothie and drink it from a straw
- Go on a nature walk and collect interesting leaves
- Sit in a coffee shop and doodle in a notebook
How can you relax and get inspired this week?
